This piece was born from a deeply personal connection to the work and artistic legacy of Yayoi Kusama, the Japanese artist whose visionary use of colour, repetition, organic forms, and immersive environments has inspired so many artists around the world.
During my time in Naoshima, Japan, I encountered Kusama’s work throughout the island, experiencing her colours, forms, installations, and artistic language in an environment that made the experience feel almost dreamlike.
This piece is not intended as a reproduction of Kusama’s work, but rather as a tribute to her, my own intimate response to the inspiration her art has given me and millions of artist around the world. The colours were chosen as a personal dialogue with the visual world I encountered on the island and with the lasting influence Kusama’s work has had on my artistic journey.
The pumpkin becomes more than a simple form. It represents memory, transformation, presence, and the way a place or an artist can remain within us long after we have left.
Every part of this artwork is created organically by me, from beginning to end. I draw the pumpkin by hand directly onto the canvas, intuitively shaping what I want to create, and then carry the entire process through myself using the tufting technique. The work evolves through my own hands, marks, decisions, and gestures, making each piece completely individual.
For me, this uniqueness is an essential part of the work. Once a piece is finished, its particular combination of colour, texture, movement, and energy can never be recreated in exactly the same way.
The artwork is backed with wood and has a cord attached to the back for easy hanging directly on the wall.
